Drinking 2 cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of liver cancer by a third, according to a new British study.

Experts from the universities of Southampton and Edinburgh (UK) examined data from 26 studies involving more than 2.25 million survey participants.

Researchers found that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer.

Even decaf coffee (decaffeinated coffee) has some protective effect. Compared with non-coffee drinkers, those who drank one cup of coffee a day had a 20 percent lower risk of developing HCC, the study published in the journal BMJ Open  found.

Those who consumed 2 cups of coffee a day had a 35% reduced risk of developing HCC, and those who drank 5 cups of coffee reduced the risk by 50%. In particular, decaf coffee still has a certain protective effect, but much less than regular coffee.

Dr Oliver Kennedy of the University of Southampton, lead author of the study, said: “Coffee is believed to have a number of health benefits and the latest findings also add to its impact on liver cancer risk. . However, we do not recommend that people drink 5 cups of coffee a day. More investigations are needed into the potential harms of high coffee consumption.”
